Just Let Go

Sometimes we hold onto things that keep us anchored to negative aspects of our past. Some years ago, Jo made the life changing decision to move onto a narrow boat and this short video shows Jo’s reflections on how ‘letting go’ can be healing in so many ways.

What Does It Mean to “Let Go”?

Letting go isn’t giving up. It’s choosing to release what drains your energy so you can move with more ease. On the canal, the boat keeps gliding when you stop over‑steering. Life is similar — less forcing, more flow.

Signs You’re Holding On Too Tightly

  • You replay old conversations and “what ifs.”
  • Your body feels tense (tight shoulders, shallow breathing).
  • You find it hard to switch off, even when you’re tired.
  • Decisions feel heavy because you’re trying to control every outcome.

A 2‑Minute “Canal Breathing” Reset

  1. Notice: Name one thing you’re gripping (a worry, a deadline, a “should”).
  2. Breathe: In through the nose for 4, out through the mouth for 6 — imagine the exhale carrying it away like water.
  3. Soften: Drop your shoulders, unclench the jaw, widen your gaze.
  4. Choose: Finish this sentence: “Today I let go of ___ so I can ___.”

Five Gentle Ways to Let Go This Week

  • Clear one thing: Donate, delete or decide. One drawer. One email folder. One lingering task.
  • Rename the story: Swap “I must” for “I choose,” and notice how your body responds.
  • Move the feeling: A brisk walk or 30 seconds of shaking loosens what the mind won’t.
  • Practice “good enough”: Set a timer and ship it at 90%.
  • Add lightness: Schedule one playful moment — a song, a stretch, or a laugh with a friend.

When Letting Go Feels Scary

Fear often shows up as “What if I drop the ball?” Remember: you’re not dropping everything — you’re choosing which ball matters. Start small, celebrate tiny wins, and let momentum do some of the work.
